There was so much lip smacking temptation at an ice-cream social held in Red Lodge last weekend that people didn’t know what to try first. The mouth-watering delights however had no problem in helping to raise $5,000 towards the Yellow Ribbon Community. The money will be used to provide emergency and short-term assistance to Veterans and their families.
“Every dollar raised last year was expended by the end of May 2014 to provide emergency and temporary housing, car repair, medicines, and to meet many other needs,” said organizer Warene Wall who provided her home as the venue for the fundraiser..
“The need for assistance is ever increasing. As our current Veterans population ages and more service members are reintegrating into our communities, there will be an increased need for many kinds of support,” she said. “There are more than 100,000 Veterans in the State of Montana with over 17,000 family members. We currently have over 2,200 Veterans in Carbon and Stillwater counties with hundreds of family members.”
More than 8,100 service members will be reintegrating into the state this year as troops are drawn down.
“Some of those will come home to our two counties served by the Carbon and Stillwater Counties Yellow Ribbon Community,” said Wall.
Next year's ice cream social is set for the last Sunday in June, 2015.
