Roughly 1% of the 579,678 members of the National FFA Organization compete in Career Development Events each year at the annual National FFA Convention. Two weeks ago, Joliet FFA had two teams compete in these National Career Development Events. Brittany Wetstein, Tanya Seymour, Emily Jones, and Teal Hatten participated in the Floriculture CDE while Tayler Mydland, Dani Dewell, Cori Krook, Jada Thompson, Leisa Stevenson, and Levi Mydland were in the Parliamentary Procedure CDE. Each state can send only their top team to the national level. Joliet FFA members won both of these Career Development Events this past year at the state level. The Floriculture CDE involves identifying over 100 plants used in the floral industry, job interviewing, product selling, making & packaging a corsage, potting plant cuttings, problem solving, floral arranging, a written test, and a team problem. The team received a bronze award. Individually, Emily received a gold award, Teal a silver, and Brittany and Tanya both received bronze. In the Parliamentary Procedure CDE, students completed a two part written test pertaining to conducting a meeting pertaining to the rules outlined in Robert’s Rules of Order. They then demonstrated their knowledge by running a mock meeting in which each member had to present one required motion and one additional motion along with debate in a ten minute time frame. After the presentation they were asked questions pertaining to their individual motions as well as the presentation. This team also earned a bronze award. As it is a team event, no individual rankings are given. The Joliet FFA would like to thank those who helped sponsor their trip: Brookstone Monument, Billings Nursery, Laurel Ace Hardware, KC Interiors, Cotter’s Sewer & Portable Toilet Service, Weis Guys Investments, Dynamic Designs, Laurel Trading Post, CTA Architects & Engineers, American Steel, Pelican Truck Plaza, Gainan’s, Joliet Schools, Joliet FFA Alumni, Joliet Booster Club, and the Montana FFA Foundation. Without the help of these businesses and groups our trip would not have been a possibility.
