Mavis Oswald-Daviau

Mavis Oswald-Daviau

On April 18, 2013, a lovely, lovely lady joined Jesus and family, just in time to celebrate her 92nd Birthday in Heaven. Barbara Kathleen Mavis Popelka was born on the farm near Acton, Mont., April 25, 1921, to Henry Popelka and Edna Armstrong Popelka. At age 10, her family moved to Billings where her parents owned and operated Honest Milk Dairy. In her youth, through 4-H, she learned to cook. She graduated from Billings Senior High in 1938, the last graduating class from the present Lincoln Center. On June 8, 1941, she married Orlyn Oswald of Broadview where they lived for 5 years. They then moved to their Rockvale Ranch near Joliet. They were blessed with four children. Mavis’ second child (a daughter) died at 13 months and then her beloved husband passed away from cancer in 1970. During their marriage, she worked side-by-side with Orlyn to hold annual registered Shorthorn Bull Sales at the Ranch. On sale days, she fed over 300 people. She made wedding cakes for relatives and many in the neighborhood. Harvest time was special to her because cooking for the harvest crew was a challenge she loved. Mavis was a Godly Woman who loved her Jesus and her family. She enjoyed Church, bowling, pinochle, dancing and traveling. She was a member of the OAKS for 28 years, and T-Bone Cowbelles for 26. She served as Secretary of the Joliet Christian Church Sunday School and was a 4-H cooking leader for 12 years. Mavis cared for her Mother for 11 years until her death at 95. In 1983, she married Albert Daviau who preceded her in death. Mavis is survived by one son, Malyn Oswald of Joliet, two daughters, Marilyn Kelley of Central Point, Oregon, and Roxy Oswald of Acton. One sister, Alice Rimpe of Billings. Eight Grandchildren: Greg and Jeff Jensen, Jason and Justin Oswald, Joette Larson, Leslie Muller, Nathan Luoma and Ashley Antoni. Six Great-Grandchildren: Trey, Tysa and Tori Oswald, Megan Jensen, Cassidy and Kelsey Larson. She’s also survived by many friends and loving extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, one daughter, Nicola Ann and her brother, Richard. Special thanks to Gary and Dorothy Holbrook, John and Betty Grewell, Brandy Polesky, Dr. Zack Meyers, and those at the Joliet Clinic for their loving care. Memorials can be sent to the Edgar Volunteer Fire Department, 222 E. Railway Avenue, Edgar, MT 59026 or Valley Christian Church, 1603 St. John’s Avenue, Billings, MT 59102.
