Local quilting groups mammoth response to world disasters

This winter a dozen members of Messiah Lutheran Church have been sewing and tying the 33 quilts to donate to the Lutheran World Relief (LWR) quilt effort.

These quilts can be used as baby carriers, as a market display when piled with vegetables for sale, as a sack for transporting goods to and from market, as sunshade, and as blankets for warmth. The goal this year for LWR is to send 500,000 quilts to countries around the world. This nonprofit organization, which specializes in International Development and Disaster Relief, has sent relief to various countries for nearly 50 years beginning in Europe.

In addition, Messiah members created 52 personal care kits filled with bar soap, toothbrushes, combs and fingernail clippers all wrapped in towels. These kits are being shipped to the Philippines where they have suffered enormously from natural disasters.
