Kathleen K. Nelson
Kathleen K. Nelson, 95, of Red Lodge, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 13, 2013, with her son and daughter-in-law by her side at the Beartooth Billings Clinic. She was born Oct. 13, 1917 in Wood Lake, Neb., to Thora Mabelle Strand and Paul Revere Kennicott, Jr. She had one sister, Evelyn Morgan, and a deceased brother, Maurice John “Jack” Kennicott.
She married Ernest Leonard Nelson on Dec. 26, 1938 in Buffalo, Wyo. They had one son, Gary Leonard Nelson. Kathleen graduated from high school in Valentine, Neb., and also attended a teacher’s college in Gillette, Wyo., and a business school in Omaha, Neb. She was a member of the Eastern Star. Kathleen was a patriot, a pioneer and community minded. She traveled to Washington D.C. to work in the War Department during World War II. She then traveled to Colorado Springs, Colo., where her husband was in the military. His telegram said, “Come at once. Job waiting.” They then homesteaded in Alaska where she worked at FAA. She also lived in Bellingham, Wash., and she and Ernest had a ranch near Hardin.
She and Gary moved to the ranch near Red Lodge in 1985. Kathleen had a great love of the outdoors and for her dogs and cats over the years. She always loved being able to live on a ranch and assist with the birth of many lambs and calves – even keeping them in her house when necessary. Also important was the commitment she and Gary made in caring for foster boys for 18 years, and she was not above writing her opinions to the Ag News. She loved volunteering at the local “Nip and Tuck” clinics and visiting the Red Lodge Senior Citizens’ Center. Her husband, Ernest L. Nelson; her brother, Jack; her niece, Alona Dailey; and her parents precede Kathleen in death.
She is survived by her sister Evelyn Morgan of Sheridan, Wyo.; her son Gary Nelson and daughter-in-law Tawny Nelson of Roberts; her foster son Larry (Danny) Kessler and family of Gillette, Wyo.; her three stepgrandchildren Nathan (Rachelle) Bruce, Tiffany Bruce (future Chris Teal) and Rachael Bruce; stepgreat granddaughter Madelyn Teal, all of Walla Walla, Wash.; her nieces Wanda Kennicott of Red Lodge, June (Neil) Snook of Saline, Mich., and Cynthia Ross of Moorcroft, Wyo.; her nephews Paul (Patti) Kennicott of Ottawa, Kansas, Phil (Katie) Morgan of Laramie, Wyo., and Stanley (Delores) Morgan of Otter, Mont.; and her great nieces Kelly (Peter) Dehio of Chicago, Ill., and Rene’ Kennicott of Anchorage, Alaska, whose a t t e n t i o n w a s m u c h appreciated. Also left behind are her dogs, Sassy and Hercules, and special cat Missy.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Saint Agnes Church in Red Lodge. Kathleen’s final resting place will be with her late husband, Ernest, at the Custer National Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary, P.O.
