HAPPENING NOW: Rock Creek Fire 40 percent contained

Grows to 910 acres

The Rock Creek Fire has spread to 910 acres but is 40 percent contained.
There are no evacuations in effect at this time, and all structures listed as threatened are under Stage 1 “Ready” Alert. Local traffic through the East Side Road off U.S. Hwy 212 should take precautions and avoid unnecessary stopping for the safety of helicopter operations. The Beartooth Highway (U.S. Hwy 212) is open between Red Lodge and the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone, which includes access to Cooke City and Silver Gate. The community of Red Lodge is open for business and campgrounds in the local area remain open.

Fire behavior was minimal yesterday due to low wind speeds and cloud cover. Favorable weather allowed crews to make significant progress. The southern flank of the fire’s perimeter is now contained and handline behind the homes in the West Fork Rock Creek is complete.

Current resources are Seven 20-person crews, eleven engines, two pieces of heavy equipment, two water tenders, and four helicopters. A total of 292 personnel.

Today’s weather will be similar to yesterday with light winds and a chance of thunderstorms. Efforts today will focus on the eastern flank of the fire where the most heat exists. Firefighters will use water from Cyclone Creek to extinguish hot spots while reinforcing handline. The remainder of the fire’s perimeter is in patrol status. Structure protection crews will continue slash removal work in West Fork Rock Creek.

Restrictions/Closures: A Custer National Forest area closure is in effect and includes closure of Silver Run Trail #102, Ingles Creek Trail #64, and Beartrack Trail #8. A temporary flight restriction (TFR) is in effect surrounding the Rock Creek Fire area. Stage 1 fire restrictions are in place for the Beartooth Ranger District.
